Description

If your Sandvik/Tamrock HL700 or HL800 drifter is the heart of your top hammer drill rig, the shank adapter is the pulse that keeps energy moving. Every hammer blow — thousands of them per minute — travels through this single component before it ever reaches the rock. Get the shank adapter wrong, and the whole system pays for it.

RockHound’s HL700/HL800 shank adapter is built as a direct, 100% interchangeable replacement for the original Sandvik/Tamrock part. Same geometry. Same thread engagement. Same fit in the chuck bushing.

What changes is what happens under the surface: a 23CrNiMo alloy steel body, subjected to our proprietary 20-hour deep carburizing process, delivers a case-hardened exterior that resists wear and fatigue while keeping the core tough enough to absorb the brutality of percussive drilling. Whether your operation runs T38 on tunneling drives or steps up to T51 for larger-diameter blast holes, there is a RockHound shank ready to thread in and get to work.

This is a shank adapter engineered to last — not just to fit.

Brand Comparison

The following OEM and aftermarket reference data is sourced from publicly available manufacturer catalogs. All dimensions correspond to Sandvik/Tamrock HL700 and HL800 drifters. RockHound is a 100% interchangeable aftermarket replacement — same geometry, better value.

Why RockHound? OEM Sandvik/Tamrock shank adapters carry a premium price that often exceeds what the application demands, especially in high-consumption environments like quarrying, open-pit benching, or civil tunneling where shank adapters cycle out regularly. RockHound delivers the same critical dimensions, equivalent or superior metallurgy, and a significantly lower unit cost — without asking you to compromise a single millimeter. Every RockHound shank is a confirmed drop-in fit. If it ever is not, we replace it. That is the RockHound guarantee.

Applications

A shank adapter does not know what industry it is in — it only knows percussive energy. These are the environments where the HL700/HL800 series (and therefore this shank adapter) gets put to work:

Typical Applications for RockHound Top Hammer Shank Adapters
Underground hard-rock mining — development drifting, production ring drilling, cross-cutting Open-pit bench drilling — granite, basalt, limestone, dolomite, quartzite and similar competent formations Civil tunneling — road and rail tunnel excavation using drill-and-blast methodology
Quarrying — dimension stone and aggregate quarries running medium-to-high-frequency drifters Hydropower construction — rock bolt drilling and excavation support in dam abutments and powerhouse caverns Geotechnical drilling — slope reinforcement, anchoring, and investigative drilling where top hammer efficiency matters
Rock Drilling Applications In Quarrying Surface Bench Drilling

The HL700 and HL800 drifters are positioned in the mid-to-high power class of Sandvik’s top hammer lineup, producing impact energies typically in the range of 15–20 kW. That power class is well matched to T38–T51 drill strings for hole diameters from roughly 48 mm up to 89 mm, depending on bit selection and extension rod configuration.

How To Select The Right Shank Adapter

Choosing the wrong shank adapter costs more than the price of the part. Here is the selection logic:

Step 1 — Confirm your drifter model The HL700 and HL800 are distinct drifters with different front-head diameters and chuck configurations. Check the machine nameplate or consult the drifter manual. The HL700 typically uses a 52 mm front head; the HL800T series can vary. Your selection must match the chuck bushing bore and driver geometry.

Step 2 — Match the thread type to your drill string

  • T38 suits lighter hole diameters (48–64 mm) in applications where penetration rate is prioritized over hole diameter. Common in development drifting.
  • T45 is the workhorse thread — strong enough for mid-range holes (51–76 mm), compatible with a wide range of extension rods and bits.
  • T51 is specified for larger-diameter blast holes (64–89 mm) and higher feed loads. Choose T51 when the drill string length is longer or the rock is exceptionally abrasive.

Step 3 — Verify the body diameter Body diameter (D) must seat correctly in the chuck bushing. A 44.7 mm body and a 51.7 mm body are not interchangeable — check your machine’s chuck bushing specification.

Step 4 — Consider operating environment For deep underground applications with sustained high-frequency drilling cycles, specify our 20-hour carburized variant (all RockHound shanks are carburized as standard). For surface drilling in lower-frequency duty cycles, standard carburizing remains sufficient.

FAQ

No. RockHound shank adapters are aftermarket replacements manufactured to the same dimensional specifications as the original Sandvik/Tamrock parts. They are not OEM products, but they are engineered to be 100% drop-in compatible — same geometry, same thread engagement, same fit in the chuck bushing.

The primary differences lie in the Thread Diameter (PCD), Hole Sizes, and Load Capacities required for the drill string:

  • T38 (38 mm): Lightweight design, optimized for smaller hole diameters and lighter drifting configurations.

  • T45 (45 mm): The most versatile, intermediate industry-standard thread for general mining and tunneling.

  • T51 (51 mm): Heavy-duty thread engineered to handle the largest hole diameters and maximum impact energy in top hammer drilling.

Thread TypeThread DiameterBest Suited ForLoad Capacity
T3838 mmSmaller holes / Light driftingStandard
T4545 mmMedium holes / General productionIntermediate
T5151 mmLarge holes / Heavy surface benchingMaximum

Yes, but cross-compatibility depends entirely on the front-head configuration. * Compatible: If both your HL700 and HL800 drifters utilize the standard 52 mm front head variant, the shank adapters are interchangeable.

  • Incompatible: Certain high-torque or specialized variants (such as the HL800T) feature distinct piston face geometries and drive lengths.

  • Action: Always verify your machine's drive section diameter (D) and chuck bushing specs before switching. Contact our technical team with your machine serial number for verification.

On average, a RockHound shank adapter delivers a service life of 150 to 600 percussion hours, depending entirely on rock abrasiveness and operational maintenance:

  • Underground Drifting (Moderate Rock): 300 – 600 percussion hours.

  • Surface Bench Drilling (Highly Abrasive/Quartzite): 150 – 300 percussion hours.

  • The RockHound Edge: Our advanced 20-hour deep carburizing process creates an ultra-hard surface layer that consistently pushes tool life toward the upper limit of these industry standards.

To prevent catastrophic drill string failure, replace your shank adapter immediately if you detect any of these 4 critical warning signs:

  1. Micro-Cracks: Visible surface cracking near the piston contact face or at the thread roots.

  2. Excessive Radial Play: Spline wear that creates noticeable rattling or loose movement inside the chuck bushing.

  3. Thread Stripping: Thread profiles worn beyond the allowable gauge limit, leading to loose couplings.

  4. Flushing Restrictions: Internal flushing bore damage or scaling that restricts water/air flow.

  • Cost Warning: Continuing to run a worn shank adapter accelerates wear on your expensive internal chuck bushings and drifter pistons, costing significantly more than a timely part replacement.
